nhl all-star fan balloting site launch

the 3rd in our series of voting sites for the NHL just launched. it was a rather crazy build up to the last minute but has some very cool features in it. check out the clean design PROD did and then witness the sweet hybrid of nice design + drupal + custom jquery on the vote page. it even includes some nice autocomplete. behind the scenes it combines mobile voting stats that come in via nhl's mobile partner. don't forget the whizbangery widget to share your voting ballot with friends.

notable custom drupal work was cron-imported xml player feeds from nhl.com, some custom additional core vote caching for additional performance boost (multiple layers), the cool hybrid of tools on the voting page, and to wrap it up this is the first site where we've delved into the wonders of localization (there are 4 different ways to view the site).

we launched at midnight EST and in 5 hours already have logged over 40k votes. not bad for off-peak hours!

the awesome team of contributors on this project (besides the great folks at NHL, XM and Telescope) were PROD (mostly jon sulkow, greg brown, nick hubben, and rob adams), and helping me out on the technical side was jon bauer.

stats update

12 hours from launch now up to 45k ballots for 365k votes. hockey fans sure love their players!

one week later

approaching 100k users and 1/2 million ballots for over 4 million votes! had some performance challenges as the servers were not prepared for this (about 30x expected) load, but more targeting caching and beefier servers have stabilized things, not to mention rules to block bots that tried to bypass the voting rules.

7 million votes

it's been just about 2 weeks and we've already processed over 7 million votes. yow!

closing in on the end...

and nearing 20 million online votes (over 30 combined with mobile). after those initial performance issues, drupal has run swimmingly!
